Legionnaires Double Up Lincolns

The Sarnia Legionnaires doubled up the visiting St. Marys Lincolns 6-3 in GOJHL hockey action Thursday night at Sarnia Arena.

Defenceman Brad Yowart opened the scoring for Sarnia 9:49 into the first period with a back door powerplay goal on a nice feed from Ryan Vendramin. Jordan Fogarty put the home team ahead 2-0 just four minutes later on a top corner one timer.

Brent House and Nathan Smith each scored for St. Marys to make it a 2-2 game after the first period.

The tie didn't last long as Brock Perry scored just 1:42 into the second stanza to pull Sarnia ahead 3-2. St. Marys goalie Paul Town was then pulled from the game in favour of Emanuel Vella after allowing three goals on 12 shots.

Sarnia broke the contest open in the third period on goals from Brandon Layman, Brock Perry and Jacob Stos. Graham Brulotte capped the scoring for the Lincolns to make it a 6-3 final.

There was some controversy after Perry's second goal as he was high-sticked on the play. No penalty was handed out and Perry received a gross misconduct for taking off his helmet. The league is expected to review the video of the play.

The Legionnaires outshot the Lincolns 33-24 overall. Sarnia went 2/5 on the powerplay while the Lincolns converted on one of five chances.

The win moves Sarnia to 19-16-2-3 on the season. They're sixth place in the Western Conference, two points behind LaSalle and four back of St. Thomas.

St. Marys meantime remains in eighth spot, two points ahead of Lambton Shores for the final playoff berth.

Sarnia's next game will be in Lambton Shores on Saturday night.
