Lambton County's only grape winery is pleased with the provincial government's move to sell Ontario VQA wines in grocery stores.
Premier Kathleen Wynne announced Thursday morning that 70 of Ontario's grocery stores will be selling wine by this fall, with half of them restricted to selling only Ontario VQA wines for the first three years.
Plans will eventually expand to 300 supermarkets across the province.
Owner Anne Alton of Alton Farms Estate Winery says the restriction will hopefully encourage people to try local wines.
"As a consumer sometimes we need a little nudge in that direction, so if it's restricted to Ontario VQA wines, people will also get more opportunity to say 'hey, I'm going to try this Ontario wine' and say 'wow, it's really good!'" says Alton. "Purchasing the Ontario VQA wine supports the structure of our economy, and the people who work in the wine industry."
Alton says she's looking forward to hearing more details of the partnership and hopes Alton Farms wine can hit the shelves as well.
