Members of Aamjiwnaang First Nation will be briefed on a multi-million dollar land claim settlement offer at a meeting that begins at 6 pm at the Maawn Doosh Gumig Community Centre.
150 years ago, local indigenous peoples surrendered 196 acres of land in what is now downtown Sarnia.
Ottawa agrees that Indian Department Agent, Joseph B. Clench, misappropriated the money and the aboriginals never received a penny.
Back then, there was only one so called "band" locally but in 1919, they separated into Chippewas of Sarnia, now Aamjiwnaang, and Kettle and Stony Point .
Now the two First Nations must decide how they will divide the settlement.
The Chippewas of the Thames were previously awarded $15 million in compensation in the Clench Defalcation claim, while Walpole Island accepted at $28 million settlement.
It's believed this latest offer is in that upper range.
