COUNCIL BRIEFS:
Habitat for Humanity Sarnia-Lambton has received a municipal grant of $7,303 to relieve some pressure of development charges on an affordable housing construction project. The non-profit organization was originally asking for $14,000 to cover charges for building two single detached dwellings at 774 Devine St. Councillors Bev MacDougall and Matt Mitro voiced the need for staff's input on a decision-making policy for future requests.

Sarnia's Fire Chief says the 24hr shift trial has been working very well since it was implemented a year ago. John Kingyens says feedback shows firefighters are generally pleased with the new schedule. Councillor Cindy Scholten, who raised the concern of overtime costs during budget deliberations, says she's pleased to see the costs for overtime and WSIB claims decrease compared to 2014.

The speed limit on Brigden Rd. from Lakeshore Rd. to Old Lakeshore Rd. has been decreased from 50 to 40km/h. Councillor Brian White says this short stretch of road will be safer for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists accessing the beach.

Sarnia council has approved the Festival of Good Things event for September 2016 to take place in the bandshell area inside Canatara Park.

The "Do it for Sarnia" fundraiser, scheduled for an evening in early May, will take place on Davis St. between Julia St. and Christina St. The event, in cooperation with the "Do it For Dan" campaign, aims to raise funds for Bluewater Health's mental health department. The City of Sarnia will fund the road closure fee of $833 to set up and take down road barriers.
