OPG Warns Of Thin Ice

Ontario Power Generation says it's imperative for residents to stay away from hydroelectric stations and dams on waterways across the province.

The message is especially important as many families are travelling for the March break.

OPG spokesperson Neal Kelly says although there are no facilities locally, OPG operates 65 hydroelectric stations and 240 dams on waterways across Ontario, from Kenora to Cornwall.

He says ice near the generating stations is weak and signs are in place in dangerous areas.

"It's not necessarily the most stable, because it has been a relatively mild winter," he says. "So what happens is, as dams open and close and water is released, the water levels below the ice are dangerous and they can fluctuate."
