Local Individual Victimized By Tax Scam

Sarnia police are reporting that a local individual lost thousands of dollars in a scam that's quite common, especially at this time of year.

Police say someone claiming to be from the Canada Revenue Agency told the victim they owed over $2,000 in back taxes and if they didn't pay, they faced being arrested and fined up to $90,000.

The frightened individual began sending money orders in increments of $2,000 to addresses in the United States and was told that various expenses were arising causing the amount owed to increase.

In the end, police say the victim paid some $20,000.

Constable John Sottosanti says scammers often frighten victims into sending money.

"Some examples are, they immediately tell you that there's an arrest warrant out for you and that if you don't act immediately, you'll be fined 'X' amount of dollars. The odd time they'll also tell you that they are an officer with the Canada Revenue Agency as well."

Police remind the public to never take any immediate action or give out any information if they're contacted by someone claiming to represent the Canada Revenue Agency.

Contact a legitimate number for the CRA, not one provided by the caller.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre can also be contacted for more information at 1-888-495-8501 or visit their website.
