Board Decision on High School Closure Pushed Back

The Lambton Kent District School Board's decision on the closure of SCITS or St. Clair has been pushed back two weeks.

Trustees will vote on the controversial issue May 10 instead of April 26.

Board chair Jane Bryce says the Accommodation Review Committee needs more time and wants another meeting given the large amount of information exchanged with the public.

She says trustees will treat a city report that favours keeping SCITS open as they do any other information received.

"The same information that we would receive from other community members, every trustee reads it and internalizes it. Then when we have our meeting to vote, then we'll know how trustees receive the information."

Mayor Mike Bradley believes the city has a role to play in keeping the community around SCITS alive and the planning department's 29 page report addresses that.

"If the board moves in the direction of keeping SCITS open, I expect there will be resistance from people that may be attached to St. Clair. I think that's where the study is helpful, it points out just the impacts are lesser on the St. Clair site, and it also is more possible to redevelop that site."

Delegations can be made to the board at its April 26 meeting but requests to speak must be made in writing at least four days prior and there will be a limit of ten minutes for each speaker.

Administration will present the final staff report on consolidation of South Plympton and Wyoming public schools to the board at the meeting on the 26th next month.

Again delegations and speakers will be allowed with proper notice.

A final decision on that consolidation is to be made May 24.
