Residents Seek One Way Street Reconsideration

Residents of a northend neighbourhood will present a petition to Sarnia Council Monday, protesting new road signs installed in their community.

All 30 residents living on Rutherglen Close have signed the document against the "one-way" road signs installed May 30.

Residents say the city failed to discuss or communicate the change with them.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley thinks common sense says if two way traffic has worked for all of these years, we should leave it alone.

"This street has been this way for over 60 years and there have never been any accidents there or issues that I am aware of. That hasn't been indicated by anyone that has lived on the street," he says.

Residents say part of the roadway in the middle of the street floods in a heavy rain and snow ploughs do not clear it in a timely manner, making one-way driving not only impractical, but dangerous.

Sarnia's City Engineer Andre Morin says they had no other option but to put up the one-way signs.

Morin says Rutherglen Close was not the necessary 3 m in width and after the city became aware of it, they could not claim ignorance in the event of a collision on the quiet residential street.
