Council Reverses One-Way Street Decision

Two way traffic will once again traverse Rutherglen Close.

Sarnia Council unanimously directed staff to remove one-way traffic signs that were installed on the quiet residential street May 30th.

The decision didn't come without numerous warnings from City Engineer Andre Morin.

"As the designated road authority for the city, it is my responsibility, along with my staff to make sure that the entire road network is safe for all users. Cars, bikes, pedestrians and everyone who uses the right of way," said Morin.

"It's also my responsibility to make sure those roads are safe to protect the city's liability. And this is where we had to take action."

"If nothings happened for 65 years, doesn't mean that something won't happen. Unfortunately that is what we are dealing with."

Councillor Bev MacDougall sympathized with Morin.

"Sometimes we mess with things and we create a host of other problems," said MacDougall.

"At the same time, I totally appreciate if you're an engineer and you carry a license to practice engineering in this province and you walk by a situation and don't bring it to the attention of the people and the process that maybe you're not serving your position properly."

Several residents who signed a petition protesting the signs attended the meeting and clapped when council announced its decision.

They argued that part of the roadway in the middle of the street floods in a heavy rain and snow ploughs do not clear it in a timely manner, making one-way driving not only impractical, but dangerous.
