Council Welcomes Proposal For New Showmobile

The wheels are in motion for a new showmobile.

Sarnia Council has asked staff to prepare a report answering questions pertaining to cost and procedures involved in the purchasing of a new showmobile, financed by the Seaway Kiwanis Club.

"I'd just like to say thank you. It's a wonderful thing that the clubs entertaining," said Councillor Matt Mitro.

It's proposed the city purchase the showmobile and the club then making payments of $50,000 annually until the unit is fully paid off.

The club has also indicated it's only interested if the unit can be delivered in time for this years Celebration of Lights event.

Staff told council Monday that if the decision was made to move forward and order September 13, "Stageline", the designer and manufacturer of the mobile hydraulic stages, has confirmed the unit can be delivered before November 18.

Councillor Dave Boushy recognized the tight deadline and said he would be willing to speed up the process.

"I'm in favour and I don't even hesitate to say that we can approve that in principle, not definite and let the administration bring all of the information (to the next meeting) September 12 and at that time we make a final decision," he said.

Boushy then asked the City Manager Margaret Misek-Evans if that step would be proper so the group knew council was in favour of the project.

Misek-Evans replied that council's direction to staff to compile a report sends the signal to the Kiwanis that council was moving in that direction.

Staff will present its findings at the the next regular meeting September 12.

The showmobile purchase is also still pending approval by Seaway Kiwanis members and the board of directors.
