That Night In Sarnia Raises Close To $30K

Sarnia-Lambton residents raised close to $30,000 while showing their support for the Tragically Hip and their lead singer Gord Downie.

Between 8,000 to 10,000 people packed into Canatara Park for "That Night In Sarnia" in August.

It was one of 181 locations publicly airing the CBC broadcast of the Tragically Hip's final concert in Kingston.

Blackburn Radio Marketing Director Aaron Zimmer says the Bluewater Health Foundation and the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research each received $14,475.

"The total, $28,950, really did catch us by surprise," says Zimmer. "We knew we would be able to get some good money through the licensed tent but it was really the t-shirt sales and the corporate donations that caught us of guard, the number of people who wanted shirts and the local businesses that just gave us money for the event and the foundations."

Since the Tragically Hip lead singer announced in May he had been diagnosed with an incurable form of brain cancer, almost $800,000 has been donated to the Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research at Sunnybrook.
