Lambton County's first baby of 2017 was delivered by midwife in Forest in the early morning hours of January 1.
Lux Lucinda Jean Smith was born just before 2am, and weighs 7 lbs, 6 oz. She's Stephanie and Sean Smith's fourth daughter, all of whom were born at home.
Midwife Susan Corchis says home births are a good alternative for healthy and low risk women. She says over the past year, midwives have delivered 150 babies at Bluewater Health and 25 at home.
"It's an individual preference, as long as they're healthy and low-risk in the pregnancy," says Corchis. "Birth isn't an illness but a normal passage in life, and if women are more comfortable in their own bed with their own bathroom and environment they're created with their families, then we support their choice as midwives."
The City of Sarnia's first baby of 2017 was born to Elizabeth Dafoe.
She gave birth to a 6 lbs 14 oz baby girl named Jasmine Noel Marie around 12:16pm New Year's Day.
