Student Medical Policy Welcomed Locally

The Lambton Kent District School Board is welcoming a new provincial policy which will require individual care plans for students with medical conditions.

Ontario's Education Minister Mitzie Hunter says the plan will make schools safer for students with conditions like asthma and epilepsy and will come into effect by the start of the next school year.

Superintendent of Special Education Angie Barrese says they've set up similar plans in the past with students and it works really well.

"We do see a higher frequency of allergies and we see allergies to more substances," says Barrese. "We see strawberry allergies, nut allergies, milk, eggs... sometimes the allergies for children are more complex, so certainly they may need a different plan of care then a different child who has different allergies. That's really where the individualized piece comes."

Barrese says they will double check to make sure their policies are still in line with changes announced by the province.

"Yes, we are governed by program policy memorandums," she says. "Yes, we are using those to update our own internal regulations and procedures and yes, we have all of the necessary procedures up to date. We've created one new procedure, entitled 'Seizure Disorder', so that is new for our students, our schools and our parents to access."

She says parents can access all of their procedures on the school boards website.
