Info Session Looks To Save Oak Trees In Sarnia-Lambton

The City of Sarnia is taking action to prevent an invasive species from spreading to local oak trees.

The parks and forestry department is holding a public info session on Wednesday, March 28 to discuss what can be done about oak wilt, a lethal fungal disease that can kill oak trees in a single season.

Manager Patti Ross hopes the meeting can create a network of people to help stop any spread and says there are two key things you can do to help.

"Avoid having your trees pruned during the time of the flight of the beetle that transmits the disease. So we're preaching April 15 to July 15 at the very shortest," says Ross. "And to not move firewood during that time. That is key."

The problem has yet to appear in Sarnia-Lambton, but it's already affecting St. Clair County, Michigan and Belle Isle near Windsor.

The info session will feature speakers Richard Wilson from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Philip Kurzeja of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.

Spots are still available but Barnes says there is limited seating.

The meeting goes from 10:30am to 12:30pm in council chambers at city hall.
