Officials Hopeful Peace At Pinery Will Hold

Ontario's Ministry of Natural Resources doesn't expect summer camping trips to Pinery Provincial Park will be hampered by protesters.

A trailer blocking the entrance to the Grand Bend park was removed after the province and a small group of Indigenous protesters reached an agreement on March 29.

Maynard T. George parked the trailer there March 19, claiming the land belongs to his great-grandfather's descendants.

Ministry spokesperson Jolanta Kowalski says the deal, in part, calls for historical research into the claim and improved communication between the ministry and the individuals involved.

She says they're feeling good about the agreement moving forward.

"It's really important, obviously, that we really want the public to feel like they can come and enjoy the park as they have for years," says Kowalski. "And this gives some certainty as we do move into the more busy park season."

There was also a month-long protest that began November 9, 2017, that the ministry said cost the park about $20,000 in lost revenue, and George staged a similar protest in 2014.
