Gun Amnesty Program A Success

Sarnia police accepted 51 guns during the recent gun amnesty program across Ontario.

For the entire month of April, gun owners were able to surrender unwanted or illegally owned firearms to police without consequence.

Constable John Sottosanti says 17 shotguns, 15 rifles, one muzzleloader firearm, 12 handguns and six air rifles were collected.

"I don't really know if we expected that high of a number, but it was surprisingly high," says Sottosanti. "Actually, we were very happy to see that these guns have been turned over. A lot of them were from people that had unfortunately passed away and the firearms had been left behind. Rather than having them sit there and potentially become stolen, the families did the right thing."

Constable Sottosanti says 32 of the weapons were non-restricted, 11 were prohibited and one was restricted.

He says over 100 lbs of ammunition was also turned over to city police.

Lambton OPP received 14 guns during the month long amnesty program.

Constable Chris Doupe says 10 long guns and four handguns were collected.

All the firearms and ammo will be destroyed.
