Crashes involving alcohol and/or drugs are a leading criminal cause of death in Canada.
MADD Sarnia/Lambton will remember the victims and the survivors Thursday, September 27 at 7 p.m. at their annual candlelight vigil in Centennial Park.
Chapter President Charmaine Murray said this year's event takes on added significance because of the impending legalization of recreational marijuana.
"The effects of marijuana and driving is a huge concern, as much as prescription medications for some," said Murray. "Implications will become widespread once recreational marijuana becomes legal in October. MADD national is working very, very diligently in trying to get the laws changed so we can have some sort of protection for our community."
The walk makes its way along the St. Clair River boardwalk to MADD's memorial bench south of London Road.
First responders will be on hand with Sarnia Deputy Police Chief Owen Lockhart among the speakers.
