Sarnia voter turnout dominated by older demographics

Middle-aged and older Sarnians represented the majority of those who cast ballots in the 2018 municipal election.

Figures provided by the city clerk show that about 27 per cent of the 18 to 35 age group cast ballots, compared to over 60 per cent aged 56 to 85.

Those in the 56 to 65 demographic represented 20 per cent of the overall vote, followed by the 66 to 75 demographic at 15.82 per cent.

In all, 48.9 per cent, or 25,207 of the eligible Sarnia electorate of 51,581, voted online and by telephone.

City Clerk Diane Gould-Brown said city staff did their best to help out.

"The lead up with our voter information sessions to explain how the system would work at Clearwater Arena and city hall definitely assisted in this," said Gould-Brown. "Also having city hall set up for assistance with devices for people to vote helped as well."

Gould-Brown is pleased with the overall voter turnout, which was up over 10 per cent compared to the 37.1 per cent recorded in 2014.

"That's a great number, we're up from 2014 but again there's always room for improvement."

Gould-Brown says they'll look again down the road at other ways to get the younger vote out.
