Getting rid of parallel parking in Sarnia's downtown core and moving to one-way traffic on Christina and Front streets are up for consideration.
Sarnia council is being asked Monday to direct the engineering department to start a review and design to reconfigure on-street parking to angled parking downtown -- a move that may require the redirection of traffic.
Mayor Mike Bradley said the new council needs to be extremely cautious before making a decision.
"I can point to other communities, Hamilton is probably the best example, that moved to one-way streets in their downtown quite some time ago and have been trying to rectify the damage that has been done since then," said Bradley. "It establishes traffic patterns that doesn't always work for business and it's a major change, and if a change is made without thorough consideration it will take years to rectify the damage done."
Staff have recommended the change as a way to address parking concerns identified in a public consultation session earlier this year.
Lack of parking, the cost and location of parking were identified as top issues.
