Prescribed phragmites burn planned at LGS

Those living close to the shuttered Lambton Generating Station near Courtright may notice smoke coming from the property this month.

A prescribed burn of 100 acres is tentatively scheduled for December 17, weather permitting, to eliminate invasive phragmites.

Ontario Power Generation spokesman Neal Kelly said the plants cause damage to biodiversity and interfere with the natural runoff of rainwater.

"The prescribed burn is part of the station's phragmites management plan that will help reduce phragmites by eliminating seed dispersal, and cycle nutrients back into the soil," said Kelly. "It also alleviates natural water runoff areas where phragmites are present."

Kelly said the proper permits and protocols have been obtained, and the fire department and municipal office have been notified.

The work is being done by subcontractor Ontario NativeScapes and Wildfire Specialists Inc., and is being organized by Golder Construction.

A staging area is being set up for anyone wishing to view the burn.
