A decision in the sex assault trial of former high profile Sarnia gymnastics coach Dave Brubaker is set for February.
The 56-year-old trial concluded in Sarnia court Friday morning with Justice Deborah Austin reserving judgement until February 13.
During closing arguments, Crown Attorney David Rows said Brubaker was in a position of trust and he initiated sexual contact with one of his female gymnasts.
Defence lawyer Patrick Ducharme countered by saying his client was forthright in his denials and the complainant was vague in her descriptions of the alleged incidents. He also said the complainant's accusations came long after her Olympic aspirations came to an end and may have been influenced by her fall as a gymnast.
Brubaker has pleaded not guilty to charges of sexual assault and sexual interference that were laid in December of 2017.
The charges cover the period from 2000 to 2007 and relate to a girl who was under 16 during part of that time.
The court heard that Brubaker coached gymnastics for 41 years, and was at Bluewater Gymnastics for 32 years. He is the former director of the Sarnia club, the former women’s national team director for Gymnastics Canada, and was the country’s head gymnastics coach at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
