Christmas isn't cheery for everyone but help is available

The Canadian Mental Health Association is offering advice on how to manage increased stress and anxiety this holiday season.

The organization says this time of year is very difficult for many that have feelings of isolation and loneliness.

Those feelings can be heightened for those who don't have family or friends to be with.

Spokesperson Angela Kirkland has a few tips for those who are struggling.

"Regular exercise is the number one way to increase mood and increase our mental health and wellness, but it's the most under-utilized," said Kirkland. "Self-care including adequate sleep, a healthy diet, and relaxation practices are also important."

Kirkland said she encourages people to make use of CMHA's Mental Health First Response Support Team.

They're available 24 hours a day, seven days a week by calling 519-336-3445.

You can also visit them at 210 Lochiel Street between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays. They're closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Years Day.
