Canadian Cancer Society promotes dry February

The Sarnia-Lambton branch of the Canadian Cancer Society is encouraging residents not to drink alcohol during the month of February.

It's part of the nation-wide Dry February initiative, where those taking part get others to sponsor them for staying away from booze.

Fundraising specialist Paula McKinlay said the campaign benefits both those taking part and those diagnosed with cancer.

"Dry February is an amazing campaign that came out about four years ago from an independent group that wanted to raise funds for the Canadian Cancer Society," said McKinlay. "You get registered at www.dryfeb.ca and you give up alcohol for the whole month of February."

McKinlay said last year 8,000 Canadians were diagnosed with cancer-related to alcohol use.

Monday also marks World Cancer Day across the globe.

McKinlay said it's a day for everyone to come together to support those affected by cancer.
