Homemade pottery bowls of all shapes and sizes were crafted by local celebrities Friday morning to help end hunger in Sarnia-Lambton.

The Celebrity Bowl-a-Thon was held at Lambton College in advance of the 12th annual Empty Bowls fundraiser this spring.

Ceramics professor Beth Turnbull Morrish helped various community leaders, police officers, firefighters and others create their works of art.

"You know, Empty Bowls is so important because it shows how people can use their own talents and abilities to help others in the community," she said. "So the students, staff and members of the Sarnia Lambton Potters' Guild make the bowls, but we couldn't individually give $10,000 to help end hunger in the community. But if we work together and use the abilities we have, we can do that."

The finished bowls will be available for purchase by donation during the Empty Bowls dinner April 11.

Half of the money raised will go towards the Inn of the Good Shepherd's food bank, which feeds about 1,800 people in the community every month.

Turnbull Morrish said the other half will go to Lambton College's food bank, which any student can access by visiting the Student Administrative Council office.

"Our food bank is great because we also have gift certificates for grocery stores, so you can go and get fresh grain foods. We have canned goods, we have sundries-- so tampons, condoms, all of that good stuff."

To date, the Empty Bowls fundraiser has raised over $90,000 to help fight hunger in Sarnia-Lambton.

Turnbull Morrish said she's confident they'll sell out of tickets once again for this year's event, and reach their $10,000 goal.
