March is going out like a lion as a strong storm system brought a combination of heavy rain, snow and freezing rain to southern Ontario Saturday into Sunday.
Perhaps Mother Nature's cruel prank heading into April 1 but conditions will improve through the first week of the month with sunny skies and highs around the seasonal norm of 10 C, 50 F, forecast for Sarnia by the weekend.
The last weekend of March started with Environment Canada issuing a rainfall warning Saturday. Environment Canada said 31 millimetres of rain, over an inch, was recorded at Sarnia's Chris Hadfield Airport before the precipitation changed to snow.
By Sunday morning there was a coating of snow and ice on the ground as strong northwest winds gusted to over 50 kilometres an hour and the wind chill hit -12 C. Sunday's high was not expected to climb above the freezing mark.
London received nine centimetres of snow, nearly four inches, Kitchener 13 centimetres, Orangeville 15 centimetres, and Pembroke an estimated 23 centimetres.
Forecasters say temperatures will recover through the week with near seasonal values under sunny skies as early as Wednesday.
