Groundbreaking on Corunna Habitat for Humanity project

Ground was broken in Corunna late Thursday morning marking the start of construction of Habitat for Humanity's latest Sarnia-Lambton housing project.

A ceremony was held at 411 Murray St. where a two bedroom home will be built for two women from Lambton County Development Services, Carly and Theresa.

It's the organization's fifth partnership build with LCDS, their fourth with the County of Lambton and the team at Ontario Works, and their 57th build overall.

Habitat Sarnia-Lambton CEO David Waters said nearly 150 volunteers will have a hand in completing a number of construction activities, and help fundraise.

"It's exciting for us to break ground on a new property, to have the opportunity to house more folks in need of a decent, affordable place to live. This project continues our mission to house as many people as we possibly can."

The land for the build was donated by Nadine and Doug Lasenby in honour of Nadine's uncle Eddie, who was born with a developmental disability.

Habitat Sarnia-Lambton President Rob Vandenende said this is their second build of the year, but it won't be their last.

"This is one of our first builds in St. Clair Township, so we're very excited about that. We also have other projects in the works-- there's one on Elm Street that we've purchased, which we're converting and completing right now, and we got few other builds on the go for this year. Our goal is to build roughly four houses per year in the community."

The build is expected to be complete by October 1.
