City council is taking a step to try and help new businesses thrive in Sarnia's downtown.
Council approved an amendment to the sign bylaw Monday, which will allow some exemptions for new businesses for the first six months to advertise their new location.
Manjit Singh, who runs Sitara Indian Cuisine on London Road, expanded to the downtown in March, taking over Vanilla Bean Bakery and Cafe on Cromwell Street.
He told council the location, between Front and Christina Streets, isn't easily seen so he would like to set up signs at those corners so people know where they are.
"There's not a whole lot of traffic, there's not a whole lot of visibility, the city allowing only one sandwich sign right in front of the business is just not enough," said Singh.
He recognized advertising on the radio, in the newspaper and through social media helps, but the physical aspect is very important.
Councillor Bill Dennis supported the idea.
"I believe it is crucial for us to support our entrepreneurs and small businesses," said Dennis. "Mr. Singh has indicated that the previous business in this location indicated one of the reasons that they failed was because of lack of exposure."
Dennis said they can offer a solution to the problem.
"This exemption would specifically permit up to two advertising flags and two sandwich boards, to be utilized only during business hours," said Dennis.
Dennis said the city succeeds when its businesses succeed.
