Marina repairs progressing following destructive copper thefts

The City of Sarnia is making good progress with repairs at Andrew S. Brandt Marina at Sarnia Bay.

It's estimated over $700,000 damage was done when thieves removed numerous planks and cut a number of conduits containing copper wire from under the docks in April.

Parks and Recreation Director Rob Harwood said mother nature has been very favourable to local contractors fixing the wiring that services the picnic pavilion, dock lighting, hydro distribution panels and individual boat slip receptacles.

"We actually now have dock A, and Y and B open and we're working towards having dock C and dock Z open within the next couple of weeks at the most," said Harwood. "We still have work to do at BorderPass as well, because that wire was stolen also."

Harwood said the pavilion is repaired and the pool is ready to be open.

He said they hope to have the job complete in the next two weeks.

The city has had increased security at the site since the thefts occurred and the installation of more cameras is being pursued.

A new sign, officially renaming the marina was unveiled at a special dedication ceremony Thursday morning -- in honour of former Sarnia mayor, MPP and LCBO Chair Andy Brandt.
