Sarnia council briefs - June 17

City staff have been asked to look into securing another sponsor for a new Showmobile to stage community events.

The former mobile stage was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sarnia for 30 years, but reached the end of its life in 2016.

The City of Sarnia will work with the Village of Point Edward on a policy to address the use of Indigenous-themed logos and names at its sports fields and facilities.

In letters to each municipality, Ontario's Human Rights Commission [OHRC] specifically identified the Sarnia Braves baseball organization and the Point Edward Blackhawks as non-Indigenous sports organizations using Indigenous themed names and logos and asked that they be reviewed.

Staff from the city and village will meet with local Indigenous communities and user groups to prepare a policy.

If you're frequently at city hall for meetings, make sure you take a reusable water bottle next time.

Council has directed staff to stop purchasing bottled water and plastic cups.

The decision doesn't impact other city-owned facilities, like our arenas, that have vending machine and concession stand contracts.
