Vidal Street closure planned Friday for tower lift

Imperial crews will begin the task of erecting a new fuel processing tower at 8 a.m. Friday at the Vidal Street plant.

Weather permitting, a giant crane will lift the 180-foot tall, 20-foot wide vessel so it can be anchored into place.

Public and Government Affairs Manager Kristina Zimmer said they'll then begin the detailed process of connecting the tower to the necessary equipment.

"Once the tower is lifted and put into place, there is work that has to be done to make all of the necessary connections to the equipment at the refinery," she said. "We don't have a specific timeline for when that will be done but we'll definitely provide more details before the equipment is started up. The lift was actually scheduled to take place on Thursday, but because of strong wind conditions the weather wasn't favourable to do so."

The tower weighs about 190 tonnes, and the crane has a lift capacity of 1,250 tonnes.

Vidal Street will be closed from Clifford Street to Kenny Street for the duration of the lift which is expected to take about five hours.

The tower replaces the one that collapsed in April of this year.

The locally-made tower was delivered to Imperial from Alliance Fabricating over the weekend.

It took over 16 hours to get the vessel into the plant.
