Waves whipped up by strong northwest winds on a sharp cold front battered the Lake Huron shoreline Wednesday night and Thursday morning.
City of Sarnia Manager of Development and Transportation Mike Berkvens said Thursday that a portion of the bank on Old Lakeshore Road eroded, resulting in the closure of part of the road.
"We had some washouts this morning that were right to the edge of the pavement, so we reacted as quickly as we could. At this point we do have holes in the steel wall."
An updated notice issued late Friday afternoon said Old Lakeshore Road was open again after banks were stabilized with rock protection and patches to the road were made.
The city said the road will remain open for the weekend but the condition of the shoreline will continue to be assessed in multiple areas throughout Bright’s Grove.
The Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority issued a statement Wednesday saying the wind, combined with near record-high water levels, would cause higher than normal waves hitting shoreline areas.
Residents were advised to stay well back of breaking waves and top-of-bluff areas.
