Police, fire urge Halloween safety

Motorists are urged to be more vigilant than ever this Halloween with trick-or-treaters making their rounds on a dark, wet and windy night.

Sarnia police and fire have circulated their yearly list of safety tips.

Children are reminded not to go inside unfamiliar homes or attend homes with the lights off and stay with a parent or group while trick-or-treating.

Cst. Nelson Amaral said children should walk not run, and avoid zig-zagging across the street while going door-to-door.

"If you can do one side at a time and cross at the corner," said Amaral. "Wear bright coloured clothing, bring a flashlight for example or anything that's reflective."

Cst. Amaral said they also have a limited amount of reflective wristbands available at Sarnia Police Headquarters for trick-or-treaters.

Drivers are reminded to be on the lookout this evening for trick-or-treaters and to slow down.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue recommends battery powered candles or glow sticks inside jack-o-lanterns instead of candles.
