Sarnia's Heritage Committee is recommending council hold off on putting a historical designation on the former Sarnia Collegiate Institute and Technical School (SCITS) right away.
Mayor Mike Bradley said the committee wants council to consider another approach Monday.
"The recommendation is there would be no designation by the city as a historical site until there was an effort by anyone to demolish it," said Bradley. "I think that's a fair direction to head into on this basis. It's going through the process right now where the school board is offering it to different parties and the city has put its name in to assist another group that's being formed out of Vision Nursing Home to look at other uses for the property."
Bradley said there seems to be solid interest from the group.
"They're looking at what they could do with the property and from discussions with them, they certainly want to keep the unique nature and history of the property."
The school held its last classes last June.
The property at 275 Wellington Street was declared surplus by the Lambton Kent District School Board in September and a private security company was hired to monitor and patrol the site at night.
