United Way Compassion Fund gets $50K advance from Shell

Shell Canada is contributing $50,000 to the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton's COVID-19 Compassion Fund.

The money will be distributed to social services agencies so they can continue their critical work during the pandemic.

General Manager of Shell's Sarnia Refinery Guy Hackwell said recognizing and responding to local need is part of being a good neighbour.

"Sarnia-Lambton is a caring community, repeatedly demonstrating we are stronger together. In crisis, we take a stand to make sure everyone is taken care of," said Hackwell. "We show up with care and commitment for the safety of our families, loved ones, and neighbours. We are happy to contribute $50,000 as an early deployment of funds set aside for our annual fall United Way campaign."

United Way of Sarnia-Lambton Executive Director Dave Brown said the donation will have a lasting impact in Lambton County.

"We are grateful to Shell Canada for advancing us these funds as we head into the fall campaign. This donation will assist us as we continue to fund agencies coping with the COVID-19 pandemic," he said.

A total of 17 local non-profit agencies have now benefitted from the fund, worth a total of $84,000.

It supports people most heavily impacted by COVID-19, including elderly, indigenous populations, mental health and addictions, persons with disabilities, homeless, and others who may be identified by this public health crisis.

Donations can be made online at www.theunitedway.on.ca or by calling 519-336-5452.
