Plympton-Wyoming council will discuss how to fill a vacancy in its ranks when it meets Wednesday afternoon.
The seat held by Ron Schenk has officially been declared vacant following his untimely death last month.
CAO Carolyn Tripp said council basically has two options under the municipal act.
"They can have a by-election, which is held the same way as a regular municipal election, or they can choose the individual to fill it themselves."
Tripp said the second option can involve applications, a selection by council or be based on previous election results.
In the 2018 municipal election, Ben Dekker was the runner-up in the race for the deputy mayor position with 1,367 votes and former Wyoming Fire Chief Mike Vasey finished sixth in the race for the five council seats with 1,177 votes.
Tripp said council has 60 days to decide how to move forward.
She said a by-election could be difficult during the current pandemic.
"A by-election may require interaction that is not recommended at this time."
Ron Schenk passed away May 15 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Plympton-Wyoming council meets virtually June 24, at 4 p.m.
