There won't be a traditional Labour Day parade in Sarnia on Monday.
The Sarnia and District Labour Council said this year's event has been cancelled due to COVID-19.
Instead, they're holding a virtual celebration to honour the hard working men and women in town, including the region's 17,000 unionized workers.
Council President Jason McMichael said Sarnia-Lambton wouldn't be able to thrive without them.
"I always say that this is a workers' town, this is a town that was built by and for workers," said McMichael. "Every element of our economy really just comes back to the workers in the community. It's always been a great reflection."
This year's event is the 118th annual, which is the longest running in all of Canada and is usually one of the most well-attended.
"We're hoping that the five or six thousand people who normally line Front Street to watch the parade will tune in to watch us on YouTube and Facebook and take a second to really think about all of the gains that workers have made on behalf of other workers."
McMichael said they aren't disclosing the location of the event in order to avoid drawing a crowd during the pandemic.
The event kicks off at 10 a.m., and will be streamed at Dave Burrows' Facebook page
