Sarnia council briefs

The dredging of Cow Creek has been referred to the 2021 budget.

Staff warned the $750,000 cost hasn't been accounted for in the 10-year capital budget, and that could result in the need to delay or cancel other capital projects, or increase taxes, to cover the cost.

A group of residents raised concerns this fall that a sandbar grew into a dangerous shoal, in the area just west of St. John in the Wilderness Church in Bright's Grove.

A preliminary investigation has estimated 4,000 to 5,000 cubic metres of material may need to be removed.

A 2020 pilot project will be carried into 2021.

Sarnia council has decided to run the 'Free Menstrual Products in Public Facing Facilities Pilot Project' into next year.

A total of 22 feminine hygiene dispensers were installed in nine city facilities in January, and staff monitored the facilities before 20 of them closed to the public in March due to COVID-19.

Through the end of October, just over 1,000 products were accessed through nine available city facilities.

Nearly $22,000 remaining to support the pilot will be forwarded into 2021.

Sarnia council has asked staff to evaluate the cost of upgrading the Sarnia Marina so it's functional year-round.

Councillor Nathan Colquhoun claimed the restaurant at the marina, is the "best restaurant location in the entire city and they are required to close each winter because of the seasonal nature of the building."

Colquhoun said in the interest of investing in the city's waterfront and encouraging growth, there would be a lot to gain by having the restaurant operate year-round.

Sarnia council has directed staff to develop a framework to allow laneway housing and report back in the first quarter of 2021.

A laneway house is a form of detached secondary suite that is typically built into pre-existing lots, usually in a backyard or opening onto the backlot.

As it stands, tiny homes would be treated as a single detached dwelling.

They would need their own lot, building permit, storm, water and sewer system connections and be subject to the set development charge.
