The idea of relocating Mallroad Library to the upper floor of Clearwater Arena is being welcomed by Sarnia council.
City and Lambton County staff think the arrangement would provide an opportunity to reinvest underutilized space and save costs overall.
In a report to council, staff said the upper hall at the rink currently has a utilization rate of 16 per cent and brings in about $10,000 a year from rentals, while $70,000 is spent annually on the Mallroad branch.
Councillor Margaret Bird admitted while her feelings are mixed, she'd support the move.
"On the one hand, if by consolidating all the buildings, we save costs, then obviously I'd support that, but on a personal preference, I'm sad to see the proposal for the Mallroad Library to move to the upper floor of the arena because that library was small, had a really great atmosphere, it was a very special place to go to, and I taught there for many years," said Bird.
Councillor Brian White was excited by the report.
"I think this is excellent vision towards improving our access and repurposing of library space," said White. "As we modernize our spaces, it's really important to think about what these places could be. I think the Clearwater Arena idea is fantastic. Creating a hub with mixed-use in that building, not only is efficient, but it's extremely creative and hopefully cross-pollinating some opportunities and some interests."
The Mallroad Library contract comes to an end on December 31.
City staff have been directed to discuss the concept with the community in January and have a recommendation sent to council on March 1.
