Literacy Lambton is offering a "Money Matters" program in May to help local residents navigate their finances during the pandemic.
Executive Director Tracy Pound said the free program will be run each Monday, excluding the May 24 holiday, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and is open to anyone interested.
"Technically it's really all ages, we recommend 13-plus," said Pound. "It's discussion based, so it's designed for whatever level of financial literacy that you're at. May 3rd will focus on spending plans, May 10th banking basics, the 17th borrowing money, and the 31st will be ways to save."
Pound said the shocking reality is that many people struggle with financial fitness.
"Fifty five per cent of Canadians face unsuitable numeracy skills, only 46 per cent of Canadians have a budget and four in ten [Canadians] say that money is a daily concern."
Pound said improving your personal finances can really enhance your life.
"If there's just a way that we can help Sarnia-Lambton be a little bit more comfortable, as far as their command of what to do with their money, then this program is definitely for you."
ABC Life Literacy Canada Executive Director Mack Rogers said they've been running the program for the past decade, but the pandemic has amplified the need.
"What we see is that there's more and different types of revenue, so people are having more jobs and they're getting government subsidies and have all sorts of different revenue streams coming in, as well as less revenue," said Rogers. "People are making less money, things are more expensive now. So, there's a whole bunch of money juggling, that we're all doing everyday, and when you actually stop, and think, and learn a few skills, it can actually really benefit you."
Those interested in the programs are asked to register online at literacylambton.org or by calling Literacy Lambton at 519-332-4876.
