MP's petition defending online freedom of speech getting 'overwhelming response'

Sarnia-Lambton's MP wants to stop a bill which she believes would curtail Canadians' freedom of speech online.

Marilyn Gladu started a petition to stop Bill C-10, an act to amend the Broadcasting Act and to make related and consequential amendments to other acts.

Gladu said she's had a huge number of calls and emails from people in the riding that are very concerned about the government censoring their personal online content.

"The problem is that the Liberals have amended the bill to remove the protections on your individual content so that the CRTC could take down your posts that you put up on Facebook or YouTube," said Gladu. "Now that's definitely against freedom of speech and we believe it's not constitutional. We need people to be aware and to start opposing."

Earlier this month, the bill was put on hold for a committee of MPs to determine if it violates the rights of social media users.

Gladu said the Trudeau government either needs to put back the protections of individuals and their content, or scrap the bill altogether.

"If they don't like the message, and certainly this is the Liberals that are bringing it, so I would imagine that the voices from the right will be the ones that are silenced first. And people should be outraged because the CRTC's previous commissioner said this is an outright war on democracy."

Gladu said there has been an overwhelming response to her petition.

"MP Pierre Poilievre has [a petition] as well up on his site. Of course, he has some of the most followers, so he might be one of the first that would be censored if the government decided the CRTC should take down his content," she said. "People are definitely opposed to this kind of government censorship and they're becoming more aware that these infringements are happening -- infringements of our rights seem to be on the increase."

Gladu said the petitions close at the end of the month and that we could start seeing them arrive in parliament around then.

She said it's possible that the government could bring an amendment to address the issue before then.
