The last week of August will be hot.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Gerald Cheng said daytime temperatures are expected to reach up to 32 Celsius, with humidex values in the high 30s to low 40s.
"Unfortunately, I think it's going to be a warm end to August," said Cheng. "The jet stream has ridden so far North that it's pulling all that warm air stateside towards where we are and that's why we are stuck in this very humid and hot air mass."
The weather agency issued a heat warning for Sarnia-Lambton Sunday.
"[The temperature] is certainly above normal, because the normal for this time of year should be around 25 degrees, so we're about five, six and even seven degrees above normal. But, heat waves do come sometimes, especially in the summer, and especially in July and August and they're certainly not out of the question even into September."
Cheng said there may be some relief toward the end of the week, but it will likely be brief.
"We might get a bit of a break Thursday and Friday, but there is another surge of heat coming for the weekend, so certainly this could last all week but we'll have to wait and see and monitor those specific conditions."
Cheng said heat waves become more frequent and intense with climate change.
He said more seasonal temperatures are expected when students return to school after Labour Day, and temperatures in the mid-20s or slightly below are expected the week of September 6.
We’re reminded that extreme heat affects everyone, and we’re urged to drink plenty of water and stay in a cool place.
Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.
Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.
