Five charges have been laid against two operators following a COVID-19 compliance blitz at local businesses.
Lambton Public Health recently issued a reminder for businesses to follow proof of vaccination screening requirements after several complaints were made.
LPH Manager of Health Promotion and acting Chief Nursing Officer Michael Gorgey said with help from the City of Sarnia and other agencies, 164 inspections were carried out over a three-day period.
"We had officers from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Transportation, Ministry of Labour, the AGCO (Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario) really come together and do this work both in the City of Sarnia and throughout the county," he said.
Gorgey wasn't able to specify who was charged as the charges were issued by provincial offences officers, not by LPH.
The inspections took place between November 4 and November 6 at restaurants, recreational facilities, and other businesses where patrons are required to provide proof of vaccination prior to entry.
Gorgey said enforcement officials took an educational approach during the blitz to inform and ensure businesses were following proper COVID-19 procedures. There are no immediate plans to hold another blitz in coordination with the province in the near future, however, Gorgey said enforcement among local agencies will continue.
"Local enforcement of the Reopening Act is an expectation of the province and so we are working with the City of Sarnia, OPP, and other enforcement agencies on ensuring that operators, [who] are required to have measures in [place] under the Reopening Act or proof of vaccination, are following the rules."
The blitz was deemed as a success by the health unit. Gorgey said he hopes it provided clarity in regards to compliance.
"The blitz was just a further reminder that we need these operators to follow the rules and to make sure that those settings, which have been deemed more high-risk, are following those rules so that we can continue to have a safe and open community," said Gorgey.
