Strong defensive effort helps Sting edge Attack 3-2

The Sarnia Sting came back to beat the visiting Owen Sound Attack 3-2 Wednesday night.

Sting forward Nolan Burke had a goal and an assist, defenceman Ryan Mast had two helpers, and goaltender Ben Gaudreau had to make just 19 saves.

The Attack opened the scoring with a power play goal at 13:07 of the first period. With just over a minute to play in the first, Sarnia's Burke tied the game at ones with a power play marker of his own.

Owen Sound regained its one goal lead at the 8:55 mark of the second period, the lone goal of the middle frame.

Sarnia added another power play goal five minutes into the third period, the third goal of the season for Marcus Limpar-Lantz. Just over a minute-and-a-half later, Angus MacDonell gave the Sting their first lead of the game.

Sarnia would shut things down the rest of the way, allowing just two more shots on goal -- Owen Sound's final shot of the game came with over 12 minutes to play.

Sting netminder Gaudreau was happy with his team's defensive effort.

"It's definitely a big help for me, especially when they keep them to the outside, it's nice. It's a little bit of a change from last year, getting [shots] down into the twenties and that's pretty awesome. So, I think it's a big development and a big jump that we took."

The Sting have allowed an average of about 22.5 shots per game through five games this season. The hockey club is also averaging around 30 shots against their opponents.

Burke, who was named the first star of Wednesday night's contest, said he was happy with his game.

"I just really tried to use my size against the defence and go wide. Unfortunately, I didn't get any open looks on those but drew the penalties and we scored two goals on the power play from those."

Sarnia wore blue Lambton College themed jerseys for the game as part of Lions Night @ The Sting, an event to support student mental health initiatives. The jerseys are being auctioned off online -- the bidding period ends Sunday.

The Sting are 4-1 in the early going. The team will look to continue its hot start against the visiting Windsor Spitfires Friday night.
