Dry Feb perfect fit with new alcohol guidelines: Canadian Cancer Society

Around 60 people in the Sarnia area are going alcohol free this month in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Since 2016, Dry Feb has raised over $10-million to support people affected by cancer.

Society Senior Specialist Lynn Murad said it's also a great way to get healthy.

"Three out of four people that have participated in Dry Feb in previous years have limited their alcohol consumption beyond February."

Murad said the new guidelines on alcohol consumption, that consuming more than two drinks per week constituted a moderate health risk, fit perfectly with their mission for Dry Feb.

"Which is to increase awareness on the link between alcohol and cancer and to raise money for an important cause. So, we support the new guidelines and we are working very hard on supporting policies that will limit Canadians alcohol consumption."

Murad said around 40 per cent of Canadians aren't aware that alcohol consumption increases the risk of cancer and that any amount of alcohol increases your risk of different types of cancer.

Murad added that the idea that a glass of wine a day is good for you is an old wives' tale.

"The research has continuously shown that alcohol is a group one carcinogen, so a group one cancer-causing substance."

For those interested in participating in Dry Feb, Murad said it's not too late to sign up.

"And then you can tell your friends, your family, your coworkers that you're planning on doing this campaign for the month of February and you're going to be alcohol free. And then people can help you fundraise for that cause and they can even join in."
