The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) is being recognized for its efforts to get apprentices paired up with local employers.
SLEP's online job match tool has won an award for best workforce development and resident attraction initiative in the province.
The accolade was announced at the recently held Economic Developers Council of Ontario (EDCO) conference in Toronto.
SLEP Economic Development Officer Cari Meloche is overjoyed by the news and said the tool is instrumental in assisting local industry.
"We literally have hundreds of apprentices that are really interested in working in the Sarnia-Lambton area," said Meloche. "With this recognition, it was just a great reminder for local employers to register today for this free online matching tool. We've heard from apprentices that it can often be challenging to find local employment opportunities. This way, it allows the employer to save time so they have one place to go and have that online tool do the matching for them."
Meloche said our community is doing a good job at raising awareness about the demand for skilled trades jobs.
"I also want to recognize our school boards for the efforts and partnerships that we've been working very closely with to prep our youth locally to stay in the Sarnia-Lambton region," she said. "There are definitely a lot of opportunities that are well-paid jobs within the skilled trades."
Meloche said the online tool identified 140 skilled trades across the province, and there are opportunities for apprenticeships right across the board.
