Municipal workers across Sarnia-Lambton, emergency responders and hydro crews were preparing for a possible ice storm Wednesday.
Environment Canada posted a warning expecting a prolonged period of freezing rain with a possibility of 10 to 20 millimetres of ice build up in some areas.
Sarnia's General Manager of Engineering and Operations, David Jackson, told Sarnia News Today late Wednesday morning that crews had already started de-icing problem areas, like overpasses, before the snow fell.
"All our crews are lined up to get started," Jackson. "We encourage people to stay off the roads if they can, first for their own safety and then it makes it easier for us to do our job."
Jackson said the city's forestry team was also ready.
"Some of the forecast is projecting a lot of ice and heavy winds, so we do expect there will be tree limbs falling. So, our parks department is ready to assist with cleaning those things up."
Jackson said falling ice is also a concern.
"I think everyone should be cautious. If power lines are down, or tree limbs are coming down, you should stay away and be cautious when you're out."
OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt urged drivers to be safe Wednesday.
"Make sure you have your full headlighting system on," said Schmidt. "If you're out on the roads, give yourself lots of space in front of you, so you can slow down and change lanes or stop if needed and be aware of how quickly these conditions can change."
Bluewater Power and Hydro One told customers to prepare for extended outages.
The utilities said it's a good idea to have water and food that won't spoil on hand, a manual can opener, windup or battery-powered flashlight, and a radio with extra batteries.
They're also reminding us to charge our electronics.
