Sarnia-Lambton celebrates Canada's birthday

The City of Sarnia will celebrate Canada Day with several activities on July 1, where attendees are encouraged to ride their bicycles.

As per usual, festivities will run at Canatara Park from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. before shifting to Centennial Park from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m.

The Canada Day Parade will begin from the corner of Lakeshore Road and Colborne Road at 11:30 a.m. The parade will make its way west on Lakeshore Road, south on Christina Street North, and through Canatara Park on Lake Chipican Drive. The parade will finish at Sandy Lane.

At Canatara Park, opening ceremonies and a performance from the Lambton Concert Band will held be at the bandshell. There will also be kid's activities and entertainment, a handmade vendor market, and multicultural food vendors.

Canadian Army Reserve personnel of the 1st Hussars will participate in the parade and armoured vehicles will be staged at Canatara Park for the public to see.

At Centennial Park, food vendors and live music will entertain attendees prior to the fireworks show. Atomic Hearts, Rebound Rocks, and Night Moves are scheduled to perform.

Canada Day celebrations will end with fireworks over Sarnia's waterfront at 10 p.m.

Fireworks will be rescheduled to July 2 if there's inclement weather.

Bus services through Sarnia Transit will be free on Canada Day with a modified schedule, which can be found by clicking here.

Residents are being encouraged to cycle to festivities through a bike-friendly initiative held in partnership between nuSarnia Foundation, the City of Sarnia, and Bluewater Trails.

“With so much going on to celebrate Canada Day it’s the perfect opportunity to highlight the benefits of cycling infrastructure as an alternative for families to get out and enjoy all that the City has to offer," said nuSarnia Executive Director Tristan Bassett.

Temporary bi-directional bike lanes and wayfinding signage will be placed along two designated routes; one along the Howard Watson Nature Trail and the other from downtown Sarnia. A bike parking station will be set up at Canatara Park for riders to lock-up their bicycles. Further details can be found on the city's website.

Meanwhile, other area municipalities are holding Canada Day events on July 1.

The Town of Petrolia will start the day with a Kids Fishing Derby at 7 a.m. at Bridgeview Park. Afternoon activities will be set up at Greenwood Park and fireworks will begin at dusk. A full line up of activities can be found on the town's website.

In Plympton-Wyoming, the Canada Day Parade will take place at 11 a.m. from McKay Park to the Wyoming Fairgrounds, where activities will be set up until 3 p.m. A schedule has been posted on the town's website.

The largest Canada Day fireworks display in southwestern Ontario will be held in Grand Bend. Live music will begin at 7 p.m. and fireworks are scheduled to start at 10 p.m. Grand Bend’s Canada Day Celebration webpage has listed event details.
