SGCC eyeing reopening after storm wipes out 150 trees

The Sarnia Golf & Curling Club (SGCC) is still working to reopen its course following last week's nasty storm.

On Thursday, a severe thunderstorm ravaged parts of Sarnia-Lambton, downing trees and power lines and temporarily leaving thousands of people with power.

SGCC General Manager Glenn Phillips said they will be closed until at least this Friday after the storm hit around 150 trees on the course.

"Either fully down or damaged enough that they're going to have to be taken down," he said. "So yeah, a fair bit of cleanup, it's certainly going to take us quite some time, and with the support of Guardian Tree and perhaps a few others, we'll hopefully get open soon."

Phillips said it seems like tree companies are focusing on dangerous and other high-priority trees at the moment. He said the golf club is still working on a reopening date.

"It's early days in accessing and needless to say, we're not the only ones with tree damage," he said. "There's other community members that find themselves in a precarious situation."

Phillips said a tree company stopped by on Friday to clear some of the trees that fell in the parking lot. He said the damage was spread out across the course.

"It certainly did affect every hole except for three [holes]. So, 15 out of the 18 holes, you can certainly see a large amount of damage," he said. "A lot full trees blown over, the bulbs just kind of uprooted and tipped over, and lots of broken branches, tops of trees down in the middle of the fairway."

The storm hit the area while the Sarnia Sting were hosting their annual charity golf tournament in support of Pathways Health Centre for Children. Unfortunately, the tournament had to be cut short after about 12 holes.

Earlier in the year, the site unveiled its newly renovated course, which featured new tee decks, bunkers and other upgrades.
