FBCL says repairs to Blue Water Bridge progressing well

The Federal Bridge Corporation (FBCL) says maintenance work on the original span of the Blue Water Bridge is progressing well.

They shared an update Monday, on the work that's been ongoing since July 5.

In the meantime, the second span is open for traffic in both directions.

The FBCL said the project contractor has a team of over 25 personnel, and remains on track to complete the project by the October 5 target.

Key milestones have already been reached including the completion of cross beam reinforcement, preparation for bearing replacement, and milling of the bridge's asphalt surface.

Next, they'll be removing the waterproofing membrane, grinding and preparing the exposed concrete deck surface to allow for its repair, and will start to replace an existing expansion joint.

The FBCL said many components of the project, including those for the bearing replacement, deck work, and expansion joint replacement, are happening concurrently to ensure swift and efficient progress.

They said signs and curbs have been installed to help with traffic management, and all toll lanes are functional for U.S.-bound traffic.

Those travelling or planning a trip across the bridge, can view the 24-hour live traffic camera feed on the FBCL’s traffic website.

Residents are encouraged to follow @BlueWaterBridge on Twitter for regular traffic wait time updates. The FBCL said that reduced lane access during the project prevents the availability of a dedicated lane for NEXUS and F.A.S.T. on the bridge for motorists, buses and trucks.

In addition, wide loads are restricted to less than 3.35 metres.
