Veterans, families invited to information session at Sarnia Legion

Local veterans have the chance to ask questions and voice any concerns they have during a session at Sarnia's downtown Legion on Friday.

Acting Provincial Services Officer Brittany Campbell will be on hand to offer assistance and advice.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62 spokesman Bill Chafe said it's a worthwhile event for veterans, widows, and their families.

Services offered through Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) will be highlighted.

"Brittany can help them see if there's anything else available to them, and talk with them about their situation and condition," said Chafe. "She can maybe make some recommendations as to opportunities that VAC offers that aren't currently being explored."

Chafe said there are sometimes misconceptions about veterans.

"When we talk about veterans, a lot of people automatically go to World War II or Korea veterans," he said. "But, unfortunately due to age and time we are losing those veterans. There are many more veterans out there that served post-Korea, the cold war days, peacekeeping missions, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Afghanistan. There are veterans that have received injuries while on their own base training. Those injuries or illnesses entitle them to assistance through Veterans Affairs Canada. We are here at the Legion to help them get those benefits that they're entitled to."

Chafe said all too often people, as a result of their service, receive injuries or illnesses later in life.

"I use the example of a paratrooper," he said. "You could have had 50 or 60 jumps and never had a situation. But, now that you're 60-years-old, and you had a knee replacement and the other isn't good, that can probably be attributed to your military service and it becomes a pensionable condition."

Friday's session, at the Legion on Front Street, starts at 10 a.m.
